Integrating community policing into a broader crime prevention approach

Professionnel Seminar for Police Services and crime prevention operational actors in Africa / Cap Town, South Africa

Author(s) : International Centre for the Prevention of Crime

This International Seminar, organized in cooperation with the South Africa Police Service (SAPS) and the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research of South Africa, was held in Cape Town on May 17 and 18, 2007. The Seminar brought together more than 100 participants from fifteen countries in Sub-Sahara Africa.

This innovative seminar was based on organizational approaches and designed for operational actors, with small group field visits and discussions on a given theme. The groups were led by field experts or academics and included real case reports based on site visits to communities or police departments in Cape Town. Four important themes were discussed: youth gangs and arms, street kids, alcohol and drugs, and women’s safety. The seminar conclusions emphasized the need to establish partnerships between police services and other actors.
