Women’s Safety: A Shared Global Concern

ICPC Lunch Seminar in partnership with Women in Cities International / February 23rd 2009, Montreal (Canada)

This lunch seminar, organised in collaboration with Women in Cities International and entitled "Women’s Safety: A Shared Global Concern", was held on the premises of the City of Montreal. Attending the event were more than 40 participants from community organizations offering aid and services to women, various Tandem offices, the City of Montreal, the SPVM, and other ICPC and Women in Cities International partner organizations.

The session began with a presentation by Hélène Fotopoulos, member of the Executive Committee, head of Women’s Issues for the City of Montreal. Valérie Sagant, ICPC’s Director General, then made her address, followed by Kathryn Travers, Women in Cities International.

Valérie Sagant presented the proceedings from ICPC’s Annual International Colloquium on Women’s Safety.

Subsequently, Kalpana Viswanath, Project Manager, "Gender Inclusive Cities Project", UN Trust Fund-WICI lead the workshop entitled "Promoting Women’s Safety in Asia: Experiences from Delhi ".

A roundtable on women’s safety in cities, chaired by Margaret Shaw, ICPC, concluded the session. Speakers included Marie-Josée Bonin, City of Montreal, Carolyn Whitzman, Melbourne University, Australia and Marc Parent, City of Montreal Police Service (SPVM). Mr. Parent presented the SPVM’s conjugal violence practices.
