Creation of an observatory on prevention and community safety for Quebec, Canada / 2002-2006

Technical Assistance Mission, Canada

The ICPC conducted a project to create an observatory of safety and prevention in Quebec for the Ministry of Public Security of Quebec. This project for the Ministère de la Sécurité publique du Québec furthered reflection on 1) the indicators used to measure the state of security and prevention; 2) on data sources and their reliability; 3) on the use of this type of information to improve practices and decision-making; 4. and also fostered new partnerships with existing observatories (OFDT, OEDT, OVS) and future observatories (France’s Observatoire national de la délinquance).

The first step of the project was completed in 2006 with the production of its Report: “Quebec Observatory on Safety and Prevention: Taking Stock”, which collates all relevant information and data sources in Quebec. This initiative also gave rise to a project in 2006 for an international meeting on observatories.
