Exchange of practices on the phenomenon of Street Gangs/Youth Gangs Québec-Belgium / 2009 - 2013

Exchange of practices, Canada-Belgium

In 2009, ICPC, in partnership with the Belgian Forum for Urban Security, organized an exchange between Belgian and Quebecois actors as part of a seminar on the phenomenon of Street Gangs/Youth Gangs in Brussels. This seminar brought together some sixty stakeholders from institutional, community, police and justice sectors to discuss and share knowledge and practices. On this occasion, the following topics were covered: 1. the emergence of the phenomenon on the political agenda (origin and evolution); 2. the definition of the phenomenon of urban/street gangs; 3. intervention approaches to tackle the problem of urban/street gangs?

In 2010, ICPC, Bruxelles Avance Brussel Vooruit (BRAVVO) and the City of Brussels received financial support from the 5th Commission mixte permanente Québec/Wallonie?Bruxelles (CMPQWB) to collaborate on a 2-year initiative "Tackle Street gangs through exchange in practices". The Centre Jeunesse de Montreal has been involved in the project since the beginning, via its Centre of expertise in youth delinquency and behavioural issues, This cooperation aims to document promising practices in Quebec and Belgium in terms of prevention and intervention for boys or girls in or around urban and youth gangs.
