Presentation of the local prevention policy of the City of Sydney (Australia)

ICPC Lunch seminar / October 21st 2009, Montréal (Canada)

Author(s) : CIPD

Abstract :

On October 21, 2009, ICPC held a lunch seminar entitled “Going with the Flow or Swimming against the Tide? A Local Crime Prevention View from Down Under”, with John Maynard, a crime prevention and community safety specialist who has been working with local authorities in Sydney Australia for over ten years.

Mr. Maynard presented to ICPC staff and partners his experience of the comprehensive community- based safety plan that was implemented for the first time, and later evaluated in the suburbs of Sydney, Waterloo and Redfern. The presentation highlighted the challenges facing local authorities in relation to alcohol related crime, increased fear among residents, and lack of opportunities available to local residents.  His in-depth presentation of the local strategy gave many good examples of what could be done in the short, medium and long term in crime prevention, and concluded by noting ongoing challenges in relation to program continuity with and between levels of government and between community groups
