Overview of the Pilot Institute

(continued from page 1)

This issue of the International Observer provides an overview of the extensive knowledge and experience in crime prevention which the institute participants brought to the table in this inaugural session.

Over five days, a strong consensus emerged that the Institute is viable, and there was also a great interest expressed in its continuation.  The curriculum is currently being developed, drawing on the outcomes of the pilot initiative, incorporating the suggestions and contributions made by the participants and involving intensive consultation throughout the next year.  Curriculum in future years will aim to use concrete case studies to develop strategic problem solving skills.  Stay tuned!

The ten themes discussed at the Institute were:

Day I:      Historical Perspectives and Contemporary Challenges

               International Standards and Strategies

Day II:     Tools for Cities, Urban Renewal and Prevention

               Women’s Safety and the City

Day III:    Community Policing and Contemporary Challenges in Preventive Policing

               Evaluation of Crime Prevention Strategies

Day IV:    Strategic Management of Crime Prevention

Private Sector Participation and Crime Prevention

Day V:     Youth and Urban Crime Strategies

               Citizen Participation and Crime Prevention

Summaries of the presentations and links to pertinent documents on these ten themes are available by clicking the day on the side-bar heading of the IO. We also provide a brief description of the four site visits.
