Women's Safety Awards 2004

Femmes et villes international / Women in Cities International announces 10  international winners!

An education centre in Kampala, Uganda which trains police, courts, local government, religious and health leaders on violence against women, and a group of Russian architects and planners who bring women together to make their housing and cities more secure, are among the 10 International winners of the Women’s Safety Awards. International winners were honoured during the II International Seminar on Safer Cities for Women and Girls held in Bogotá, Colombia from November 22-25, 2004.

Created by Femmes et villes international / Women in Cities International, and funded by Status of Women Canada, the awards are designed to reward good practices and policies relating to women’s safety and the improvement of women’s sense of safety. Women's groups, grassroots community organisations, municipal governments, youth organizations, business community groups and other groups from across the world competed in this 1st Women’s Safety Awards competition. The international jury was impressed with the range of  wonderful initiatives and different approaches that were submitted in the past year. A list of project winners is available here.

In addition, Women and Cities International has just released its compendium on Good Practice which contains detailed descriptions of the all the winners of the Women's Safety Awards 2004, and information on all project submissions. This publication will be made available in English, French, and possibly Spanish in the early months of  2005.
