Community Crime Prevention Programme UpdateBuilding on the achievements of the National Crime Prevention Programme (NCP), the Australian Government announced earlier this year (May 2004) that it would commit $20 million (AUD) to a new initiative, the National Community Crime Prevention Programme (NCCPP) in the 2004-05 Budget.
The NCCPP programme focuses on how to increase the ability of Australian communities to recognise local crime problems and to pursue effective, locally organised, crime prevention initiatives.
A Community Grants Programme was also introduced as a new component of the NCCPP. It aims to provide practical and flexible support for local projects and trials new crime prevention approaches to:
- increase the development of broad, community-based partnerships focused on dealing with local crime prevention issues;
- increase public awareness of and support for crime prevention at the local level; and
- increase the capacity of diverse communities to deal with crime and victimisation.
There was an outstanding response to the first round of grants, with over 180 applications received by June 30, 2004. Due to this strong community response, the Government announced in September 2004 an additional $10 million in grants funding for the programme over 2004-05 and 2005-06.
The Prime Minister and the Minister for Justice and Customs announced the first recipients of grants under the Community Partnership Stream in July 2004. Recipients of grants awarded under the Community Safety and Indigenous Community Safety streams were announced in September 2004. Applications for the second round of grants are now open. The closing date for applications is February 7, 2005.
