ICPC in 2005: Towards Increased Collaboration and International Exchange in Prevention2005 marks the beginning of a fresh and exciting year for the ICPC, under the strong leadership and vision of our new President, Ms. Raymonde Dury. Ms Dury assumed this position in June 2004, succeeding Ms Myriam Ezratty, who we honoured at our Fourth Annual Colloquium on Crime Prevention, held in Paris, France, from December 1-2, 2004.
During the meeting of the Advisory and Policy Committee (APC) of member governments which took place in Paris last November, three new governments joined the ICPC, including Chile and Norway as permanent members, and Hungary as an observer member. Their presence at the meeting and support of ICPC’s activities are a valued contribution, and we would like to congratulate them for their efforts.
Chile has already taken an important initiative as the country will be hosting the forthcoming annual Colloquium of the ICPC at the end of October. In addition to the theme chosen by the ICPC Advisory and Policy Committee (APC) on the role (s) of the private sector in the prevention of delinquency and community safety, the Colloquium will also examine the tools and means to sustain actions undertaken at the local level in different cities and areas. A Word from our Former Director, Mr. Terrance Hunsley Terrance Hunsley was ICPC’s Director General from 2000 to December 2004. He is now back in Ottawa, working with the Privy Council Office of the Canadian Government. ICPC staff would like to thank Terry for his leadership and guidance. We asked him to give his personal views on crime prevention, and on the ICPC.
ICPC - What do you consider as the key milestones for ICPC during your four-year term as Director General ?
Terry - Well, permit me to say first that my time with ICPC was a wonderful experience. I was privileged to work with colleagues in Montreal and throughout the world who are professionally, personally, and passionately committed to crime prevention. Building ICPC from a fledgling project ten years ago to a strong and vital institution required the contributions of many people, and I am proud to have played a part.
When I joined ICPC, I was given some priorities by the board and government members. There were some turbulent times in the past, and there was a need to stabilize the internal functioning of the organization, to establish a clear sense of direction, and to strengthen the base of support. |
