ICPC celebrates its 10th Anniversary The prevention and reduction of crime and insecurity are central issues for governance. In the course of the past twenty years, an increasing number of countries, regions and cities have widened the scope of their prevention policies, a trend that was further solidified by the adoption in 2002 of the UN Guidelines for the Prevention of Crime. These developments have resulted in greater refinement of techniques and tools for dealing with security at the local level, or with evaluation issues, and knowledge about the impact of preventive actions has increased significantly.
Nevertheless, we still have to tackle the issue of the sustainability of crime prevention policies and actions. How can we ensure that policies and actions will be long-term and embedded in public administration? How can we improve their use by local, regional and national governments, or ensure that civil society will continue to be involved? Do all actors at different levels have the necessary knowledge and tools to ensure that projects and policies are implemented appropriately? At a time when there are increasing calls for international cooperation and technical assistance to meet the needs of countries and cities, are there sufficient resources to respond? How can international cooperation help to enhance the sustainable development of community safety at the local level? And what paths should we follow in the next decade? These are some of the principal questions raised at ICPC’s 10th Anniversary Colloquium on December 1st - 2nd in Paris, at the Cité Internationale Universitaire (pictured above).
