Transparency International (TI) is a non-governmental organisation devoted to combating corruption, primarily through access to information. Established in the early 1990’s, it brings together civil society, business and governments to focus on prevention and the reform of systems. Seven core values guide TI’s work –Transparency, Accountability, Integrity, Solidarity, Courage, Justice and Democracy.
Through its International Secretariat and more than 85 independent national chapters operating worldwide, TI works at the national and international level in analysing and diagnosing corruption, for example by measuring its occurrence through surveys and indices and by other research.
At the national level, chapters work to increase levels of accountability and transparency, but also monitor the performance of key institutions. In the international arena, TI raises awareness about the negative effects of corruption, advocates policy reform, seeks the implementation of multilateral conventions, and subsequently monitors compliance by governments, corporations and banks.
TI’s website includes their Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) which measures the degree of corruption perceived by international and domestic business communities and country analysts of more than a hundred countries. CPI is regarded as a reliable comparative corruption indicator, and is used by large number of academics and researchers around the world.
TI’s website also includes downloadable copies of their quarterly newsletter from 1995 to present and information on the Integrity Awards, launched in 2000 which is aimed at recognising the efforts of individuals (journalists, civil society activists, government and corporate member, etc) and organisations fighting corruption.
