Small Arms Survey releases a new publication

Established in 1999, the Small Arms Survey is an independent research project located at the Graduate Institute of International Studies in Geneva, Switzerland. It is funded primarily by the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs and other governments, and collaborates with researchinstitutes and non-governmental organizations in many countries.

The Small Arms Survey recently published Armed and Aimless: Armed Groups, Guns, and Human Security in the ECOWAS Region. Initiated by the Government of Mali and supported by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), the volume was edited by Nicolas Florquin and Eric G. Berman.

Armed and Aimless closely examines the negative impact of small arms proliferation on ECOWAS countries and their citizens. The first part of the book provides in-depth analysis of armed groups in Nigeria’s Rivers and Plateau States; insurgency and disarmament efforts in Northern Mali; Ghana’s clandestine arms industry; Liberia’s troubled history with disarmament; militarization of refugee camps in Guinea; and children affiliated with fighting forces in the Mano River Union. The second part reviews all 15 ECOWAS states and presents detailed information on non-state armed groups—from their origin, composition, leadership, and stockpiles to their exploitation of children as well as other violations; each section concludes with an outlook for the future.

Armed and Aimless is the first publication to be issued in the Small Arms Survey’s book series, which presents the findings of larger research projects and is designed to complement the programme’s annual Small Arms Survey, Occasional Papers, and Special Reports.

The book is available in hard copy and on the Small Arms Survey Web site.
