November/December: ICPC in FocusFifth Annual Colloquium: Agenda and ProceedingsNews ItemsGeneralEt cetera

Annual Colloquium in Chile a great success!

Combining the expertise of researchers, city-level officials, and private sector representatives, over 200 participants collectively explored topics including: sustainable crime prevention; public-private partnerships; local level crime prevention; engaging the private sector in sustainable crime prevention; private security; and security technologies.(Proceedings for both day available here: Day One, Day Two).

Several common points emerged over the two-day event (Colloquium 2005 Conclusions), with the increasing involvement of the private sector in crime prevention underscored throughout. The creation of entirely new professions in private security and the creation of innovative new technologies attest to the expansion of the field.

Participants pointed to the need to consolidate initiatives further and embed private sector involvement in all levels of crime prevention, especially at the local level. Overall, everyone seemed to agree that
security is in the interest of both the private sector and of the community, and that the private sector has a role to play in crime
prevention. Finally, they pointed to the need for further research to be undertaken, and increased opportunities at the national and international level for information-sharing and exchange in this emerging area of interest.
