ICPC to host International Training Institute on crime prevention

The International Center for the Prevention of Crime (ICPC), thanks to key support provided initially by Montreal International, is launching its first annual Crime Prevention Training Institute: Learning From Experience, Sharing Across Borders: Leadership and Strategic Management in Crime Prevention.

Following a very successful and well attended Pilot Institute in Montreal, Canada, October 2004, ICPC is offering a new program that will address current problems in crime prevention and local partnerships and community mobilization.

The Institute offers training sessions focused around three main objectives:

1. Building a comprehensive crime prevention strategy that ensures the allocation of sufficient resources and which builds on existing expertise.
2. Reviewing and updating international knowledge on the evolution of crime and crime prevention tools, and decision-making aides.
3. Creating an international network of experts in crime prevention and community safety.

The training Institute aims to bring together a small group of senior professionals and practitioners from diverse backgrounds, who are actively concerned with crime prevention.

ICPC organizes its first luncheon meetings

ICPC luncheon meeting series launched with Alain Labrousse

On February 1st 2006, the ICPC organized its first of a series of luncheon meetings. Alain Labrousse, a sociologist and international specialist in the geopolitics of drugs, figured as the featured guest. Mr Labrousse founded the Observatoire géopolitique des drogues (Geopolitical Drug Observatory) and is a member of the Observatoire français des drogues et toxicomanies’ (French Observatory on Drugs and Addictions) Scientific Committee. Furthermore, he has authored many books and lead several field studies looking at the drug market and drug policies in Afghanistan and in other Southeast Asian countries. He is also a renowned specialist of Latin America.

Marking the publication of his most recent book entitled “Géopolitique des drogues en Afghanistan” (Geopolitics of drugs in Afghanistan), Mr Labrousse visited the ICPC to discuss the impact of the international drug control system. He also raised pertinent questions about the foundations of our public policies, such as “Is control illicit substances the main objective of our policies, or are we covertly pursuing other goals as well?”
