March was fraud prevention month

On March 1st, law enforcement agencies from both Canada and the United States came together in Ottawa, Canada to kick off Fraud Prevention Month in North America and around the world. Throughout the month, members of the Fraud Prevention Forum, a Canadian-based organization, will focus their efforts at raising awareness about the threat of fraud, and, through public service announcements and the distribution of printed materials, educating the public about how they can work to prevent fraud.

Furthermore, the more than 24 countries that make up the International Consumer Protection and Enforcement Network have pledged to sensitize the public about fraud prevention by launching their respective fraud prevention campaigns. Fundamental to the awareness-raising campaigns is the message that to reduce and prevent crime, the community must be educated and involved in crime prevention initiatives. The campaigns also underscore that to be effective, crime prevention strategies must be built on partnerships between the police, the private sector, and the community.
