The Canadian Centre on Substance Abuse publishes a new study

Substance abuse costs Canadians $40 billion annually
On April 26, 2006, the Canadian Centre on Substance Abuse (CCSA) released a new study which reveals that substance (ab)use costs Canadians an estimated $40 billion CAD annually. Each individual Canadian thus spends $1267 CAD every year on tobacco, alcohol, and illicit drug abuse. Illicit drug (ab)use represents 20.7% of the total cost, or $8.2 billion, meaning that the crux of the money is spent on dealing with the consequences of consuming legal drugs - tobacco and alcohol. The costs of law enforcement represent $5.4 billion every year in Canada, amounting to 14% of the total money spent on substance (ab)use annually.
