ICPC in 2004

2004 – AN EXCITING YEAR FOR ICPC

Message from Director General Terrance Hunsley

A decade is not a long time in the life of an international organization. But as ICPC enters its tenth anniversary year, there is excitement in the air. 2004 will witness several important initiatives: a big workload, but one which reflects the assertive growth of the organization since its founding by the governments of Canada, Quebec and France in 1994.

It is gratifying for ICPC that the Government of France has offered to host the Tenth Anniversary ICPC Colloquium on Crime Prevention, at the end of November. And even more gratifying that we expect participants from more than fifty countries to be present.

An honour, and a nice challenge as well, is the recent request from the UN to organize an expert reference group and workshop for the 2005 United Nations Congress on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice, to be held in Thailand. We will engage with our partner countries and organizations around the world to bring to that meeting some of the best policies and practices in prevention of urban crime, with a special focus on youth.

Crime Prevention in Africa

In this issue we report on a number of conferences and workshops, featuring the role of local government in crime prevention, which recently took place in Africa. They attest to the growth and strengthening of efforts in African countries to expand good crime prevention at the city and national level, as well as to the work of Mayors and UN HABITAT’s Safer Cities Programme.

They include a Workshop on the Role of the Police in Urban Governance, in Nairobi, Kenya in October 2003, organized by the City of Nairobi and UN HABITAT; the ICPC Annual Colloquium Cities, Urban Renewal and Crime Prevention, held in Pretoria on 24th November; the International Conference on Sustainable Safety: Municipalities at the Crossroads organized by eThekwini / Durban Municipality and UN HABITAT from 25-28th November; the South African Crime Prevention Report 2003, organized by the Alliance for Crime Prevention in Cape Town 2-3rd December 2003; and a Thematic Session on Urban Safety at the Africities Summit held in Yaoundé, Cameroon, in December 2003.
