International Seminar on School Safety and Security

Paris, November 12-14, 2003

Comprehensive crime prevention approaches to school safety  were discussed as part of this international seminar organized by the OECD (Department of Education, Programme on Educational Building (PEB)) and the US Department of Education.  The Seminar examined school safety issues ranging from physical safety, eg. earthquakes and floods, to bullying, violence and crime, under five themes: the assessment of problems, crisis planning, physical infrastructure approaches, collaborative approaches, and education, training and support for school safety.

The collaborative session included papers on the European perspective on violence in schools (Peter K. Smith, University of London, UK), comprehensive approaches (Margaret Shaw, Director of Analysis & Exchange, ICPC) and the Amsterdam School Safety Project (Wim Ruijsendaal, Project Manager, Netherlands).

A report on the Seminar and a copy of Margaret Shaw’s paper on comprehensive approaches is attached below. It can also be accessed on the OECD website at: www.oecd.org
