News from ICPC
ICPC held its Third Annual Colloquium, Annual Crime Prevention Lecture and AGM and Board meetings in Pretoria, South Africa from November 22-25th 2003, hosted by the South African government. The February issue of the International Observer will feature a full report on the Colloquium and proceedings.
ICPC’s Workplan 2004-6 was recently approved by our Advisory Policy Committee. Terrance Hunsley our Director General, gives an update in this issue on ICPC’s achievements for 2003, and highlights of our Workplan for 2004 and beyond.
Launch of new ICPC Website. In March 2004 we will be launching our newly designed web-site which will provide more up to date, and more comprehensive information on crime prevention in our member countries and round the world, and will we hope be much easier to use. The new website will include our knowledge base (including updated national and local crime prevention policies and good practices and tools) ICPC publications, and two new features, our Documentation Centre database on crime prevention, and country Indicators of crime prevention and community safety.
ICPC 10th Anniversary in November 2004. This is the 10th Anniversary year for ICPC, and we will be celebrating with an expanded Colloquium to be held in Paris in November. The Colloquium will be a great opportunity to showcase the major achievements and developments in crime prevention in the past ten years and current challenges, but especially to look forward to promising developments.
Preparation for UN Congress 2005 in Thailand. The 11th UN Congress on Crime prevention and Criminal Justice takes place in Bangkok 18-25th April 2005. ICPC, as one of the Programme Network Institutes of UNODC (UN Office of Drugs and Crime) will be coordinating the development of Workshop 3 on Strategies and Best Practices for Crime prevention, in Particular in Relation to Urban Crime and Youth at Risk. ICPC also took parting an Expert Meeting organized by UNODC in Durban on 28th November, to discuss the development of a Manual to accompany the UN Guidelines on Crime Prevention approved by ECOSOC in 2002. This will be completed for the 2005 Congress. More generally, UNODC is organizing a series of Regional Preparatory Meetings for Member States in preparation for the Congress. These will be held in Bangkok, Ethiopia, Costa Rica in March and April 2004.
