Community Crime Prevention Programme launched in Australia

Building on the achievements of the National Crime Prevention Programme (NCP), the Australian Government announced on May 7, 2004 that it has committed $20 million (AUD) to a new initiative, the National Community Crime Prevention Programme (NCCPP) in the 2004-05 Budget.

The NCCPP programme will focus on how to increase the ability of Australian communities to recognise local crime problems and to pursue effective, locally organised, crime prevention initiatives.

A new component of this initiative is the introduction of a Community Grants Programme which will provide practical and flexible support for local projects and will trial new crime prevention approaches to:

  • increase the development of broad, community-based partnerships focused on dealing with local crime prevention issues;
  • increase public awareness of and support for crime prevention at the local level; and
  • increase the capacity of diverse communities to deal with crime and victimisation

NCCPP will allocate $4 million a year to this grants programme. These Grants will be national, application based and non-recurrent, and will be available for projects of up to three years' duration.

Projects will be classified under the following streams:

  • Community Safety Stream - grants of up to $150,000
  • Indigenous Community Safety Stream - grants of up to $150,000
  • Community Partnership Stream - grants of up to $500,000 to support promising and innovative collaborative
  • Community safety and crime prevention demonstration projects in high-need areas. To encourage partnerships across sectors and shared responsibility, the Community Partnership Stream will not fund 100 per cent of project costs and financial and in-kind contributions would need to be made by other community and government agencies.

A question and answer sheet is provided on this new programme.
